Both Adopted and Bought Basset Hound Pups Can Become Great Pets and Companions

Basset Hounds are still one of the most popular dog breeds around so it is not surprising that many people want to bring Basset Hound pups into their homes.

There are several things that a person should know about purebred pups before buying or adopting one. Bassets are great and adaptable dogs, extremely lovable and sociable and they also get along well with other dogs and pets.

The first thing you should do before getting a Basset puppy is decide what you want to do with the dog. If you simply want a lovable pet, a Basset pup adoption will be cheaper and easier than buying one.

If you want to show and perhaps breed the dog, then you will need a purebred dog that has the proper documentation and bloodline records of his parents and their achievements in dog shows.

Purebred Basset Hound Pups

In the United States, a purebred Basset Hound pup is a dog whose mother and father were both purebreds registered with the American Kennel Club also known as AKC.

A purebred puppy will cost you more, usually several hundred dollars, but a person can recuperate the money by breeding the dog and thereafter selling the purebred pups.

Reputable Basset Hound breeders should have no problem with showing a perspective owner the AKC paperwork verifying the pup’s purebred status.

If the breeder can’t prove that this paperwork exists, it’s a good idea not to do business with him or her. The puppy itself should also be registered with the American Kennel Club.

It would also be a good idea to check the Kennel Club’s website to make sure that the pup and its parents are actually registered. This way, a person can be assured that they are spending their money on a real purebred and that the documentation they were shown was not false or counterfeited.

If you’re paying the money for a purebred puppy, then you should make sure you bring home what you wanted.

Basset Hound Pups Adoption

A cheaper and very humane alternative to buying a Basset puppy is through Basset adoption. It is hard to believe, but each year thousands of Basset Hounds are abandoned in the United States and Canada.

Fortunately many of these dogs are rescued by Basset Hound lovers, brought in to adoption centers and put up for adoption.

If a person is simply looking for a great and lovable pet, Basset adoption is a great alternative because it’s usually free.

Adoption and rescue centers can easily be located with an online search and you can find both Basset puppies and adults there. Basset Pups will require more attention and will need to be housebroken as well.

Some groups will let people adopt Bassets for free while others will ask for a charge or donation. Something to be aware of is that you may not always find Basset puppies available for adoption.

Therefore, if you want to get a pet and make a good deed at the same time, you can sign up on a waiting list.

Best Time to Adopt Basset Hound Pups

A good time to check these organizations for Basset puppies is in January. Many families that get or give puppies as Christmas presents will dump them in a few weeks, due to neglect, so there could be more dogs available for adoption after New Year’s Eve.

You can also become a volunteer at a rescue or adoption center. As a volunteer you can spend time with the dogs, get to know them and see which ones will make good pets. Some rescue groups may also wave fees for people who are willing to volunteer.

Adopting a fully grown Basset can be a good alternative, especially for a person who may not have time to raise and train a pup. A big advantage to adopted dogs is that they will often be trained and housebroken and usually spayed and neutered.

This can save a potential owner both time and money, while bringing all the benefits and love that come with having a dog as a pet.
