Basset Hound Breeders vs. Basset Hound Adoption – Which to Pick Considering the Advantages and Downsides

The Basset Hound is one of the cutest looking and most lovable dog breeds around. Thus, it’s not at all surprising the large number of Basset Hound breeders out there, so finding one shouldn’t be a problem.

Basset Hound Breeders

It is fairly easy to find Basset Hound dogs for sale from breeders online but there are some concerns that should be addressed before ordering. Not every breeder is reputable and some of the online Basset Hound breeders are undoubtedly puppy mills.

Puppy mills are large commercial facilities where hundreds or thousands of dogs are bred at once. Many puppy mills sell their products through websites and pet stores.

This is why a person should locate a reputable breeder when looking for Basset Hound dogs for sale. The conditions at puppy mills can be cruel and inhumane. Buying dogs from such facilities only encourages them to breed even more dogs and continue abusing them.

Another reason to locate a reputable breeder is that some breeders will over-breed dogs that have desirable traits. This often leads to genetic defects that affect the dog’s health. A reputable breeder will take the time to breed healthy Basset dogs.

A person can sometimes tell if the Basset Hound breeder is doing this by requesting the dog’s blood line. Professional breeders maintain pedigrees and records of bloodlines which show who the dog’s ancestors were.

When checking the bloodline, future dog owners should check if the same two hounds were bred multiple and consecutive times. If the puppy’s bloodline records indicate this type of over-breeding, then it’s better to get a Basset puppy from another breeder.

A good way to find a reputable Basset Hound breeder is to locate a breeder that lets potential dog buyers visit and inspect his/her facility. This way the potential owner can determine if the basset dogs are being bred in clean and safe conditions.

Basset Hound Adoption

A cheaper alternative to Basset Hound breeders is Basset Hound adoption. Since Bassets can be hard dogs to tame and raise, each year thousands of them are abandoned. Fortunately there are dozens of organizations that rescue these abandoned Basset puppies and put them up for adoption.

Basset rescue organizations will give dogs and puppies free to good homes. If a person is looking for a Basset dog for a pet, adopting a rescued one is often a better and cheaper alternative to buying a puppy. Basset Hound breeders can charge hundreds of dollars for a purebred puppy.

A big advantage to rescued dogs is that many of them will be trained and housebroken. This can help an owner save time and money and still get a very good dog. In some cases, rescued Basset Hounds could have behavior problems that may need to be corrected.

When adopting a puppy from a rescue organization, one must keep in mind that there’s a good chance the dog was neutered or spayed. For people who want to breed the dog, this can turn out to be a disadvantage.

However, for those who just want a pet as a companion this may be beneficial since neutered and spayed dogs sometimes are better behaved.

There will usually be little or no way of determining what an adopted Basset Hound’s bloodline is.

For people who want to breed in the future, not having bloodline records of one or both dogs they breed can turn out to be a problem since buyers often ask for records before buying from any breeder.

The best way to arrange for a Basset Hound adoption is to contact local Basset Hound rescue organizations. These groups will be more likely to have bassets available for adoption, as compared to local pounds and animal shelters where finding this breed is less likely.

By knowing the advantages and disadvantages of both getting Basset Hounds from breeders and through adoption, you can easily make an informed decision.
